Keeping store shelves stocked on schedule

Retail distribution moves product from the distribution centre to many stores on a fixed, repeating schedule. It means hitting delivery appointments and working with tight retail docks. A missed window can leave a shelf empty and bring a chargeback.

Rolls Right, an asset-based trucking and warehousing company, runs scheduled multi-store delivery and replenishment for retailers and DCs across Western Canada. We move freight for major national retailers, so we know retail compliance, appointment booking and the low-profile trucks small store docks need.

Where a retail program runs from

Retail programs run from the Vancouver dock on East Broadway and the Calgary floor in the Foothills industrial corridor, with our own trucks on the lane between them six days a week.

Store routes reach across the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, into the Okanagan through our Kelowna terminal, and onto Vancouver Island through Nanaimo and Victoria. Alberta runs from Calgary and Edmonton.

What runs behind a retail program

Appointments you can plan around

We book and hit distribution centre appointment windows, and you hear from us before a window slips rather than after.

One dock between the DC and the store

Containers and full loads come into our Vancouver dock, get sorted by store, and go back out the same day. Dollarama's containers run through it every week.

Our own trucks on the route

A multi-stop store route needs someone who can redirect the truck mid-route. Our drivers are on our payroll, so that decision takes one phone call.

Empty pallets ride back

Returnables and empties come back on the trucks that made the delivery, which keeps your pallet balance where it should be.

Room for a surge

Containers land, get purged and re-palletized, and go out to distribution centre appointments inside a short window. We have run that across three provinces.

Programs stood up quickly

A weekly twelve-store cycle for a global apparel retailer went from green light to first pickups in three days.

“Moving over 50,000 pallets a year across Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton is a massive undertaking. Carlton and his team executes it with impressive consistency and commitment to our stores.”

How a retail program starts

  1. 1

    Tell us the stores

How many, where they are, whether they have docks, and what the receiving hours are.

  2. 2

    We sequence the route

Stop order, cadence, and the equipment each dock can actually take.

  3. 3

    Freight crosses the dock

Inbound gets sorted by store, so each truck leaves loaded in delivery order.

  4. 4

    Delivery on appointment

Proof at every stop, and a call before a window slips.

Retail distribution questions

What is retail distribution?

Moving product from a distribution centre out to many stores on a repeating schedule. It covers the booking, the route, the store-level sort and the proof of delivery, and it is judged on whether the shelf is full.

Do you deliver to distribution centres or to stores?

Both, usually on the same program. Freight comes in to a DC or to our dock, gets sorted, and goes out to the stores. Store-front and mall delivery is its own job with its own equipment, and we run that too.

Can you hit retail appointment windows?

Yes. Booking and appointment compliance are part of the program rather than an extra. Costco has used us for over twenty years, and we are one of three carriers serving Loblaws in Vancouver.

What happens if a store refuses a delivery?

The driver calls dispatch, dispatch calls you, and the remaining stops carry on. Because the truck is ours, we can change the rest of the route while the driver is still at the door.

Do you handle empty pallets and returns?

Yes. Empties and returnables come back on the same trucks, and we run pallet movement as a service in its own right.

Can you scale for a promotion or a seasonal surge?

Yes. Containers land, get purged and re-palletized, and go out to appointments inside the window. We have run surge programs across three provinces.

Do you work with brands that sell to Costco?

Yes. We store vendor stock in Vancouver and Calgary, build pallets to Costco's spec and deliver to the depots on booked appointments. We have been a carrier for Costco Canada for over twenty years.

Tell us how many stores

Give us the store list, the cadence and the receiving hours. A dispatcher who runs these routes will price it. Dispatch is on (604) 298-0080.

Case study

16 drivers in four days: store deliveries across Alberta for a national retailer

A national retailer's regular carrier couldn't cover its Alberta store deliveries. Four days after the first email we had 16 drivers on the road, and we ran day and night for about three weeks: close to 300 loads to 38 stores.
