How fuel surcharges work in Canadian trucking
A fuel surcharge is a percentage added to the freight charge to cover diesel. Fuel is one of the biggest costs of running a truck, and its price moves week to week, much faster than freight rates are renegotiated, so carriers adjust for it separately instead of repricing every lane.
Canadian carriers tie their surcharge to the price of diesel, so it rises and falls with what fuel costs, and most reset it weekly or monthly. Each carrier sets its own table, which is why two carriers can quote different surcharges in the same month.
Rolls Right sets one rate for each calendar month and publishes it here and in the footer of every page. To see where diesel is heading, Natural Resources Canada publishes retail diesel prices by city.
